Holder of a degree in history and certificates in pedagogy and in political science, Jean Rioux has worked as a teacher for many years. It was in the early 1990s that he made the leap into politics. He was appointed city councillor before being elected mayor of the municipality of Iberville. He was also deputy prefect of the Haut-Richelieu Regional County Municipality (RCM) and councillor for the Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu City Council. Elected provincial MPP in the riding of Iberville in 2003, he worked as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food and the Minister of Labour. In 2007, he accepted a position of administrative judge at the Commission municipale du Québec. In 2015, he was elected in Saint-Jean as MP in the federal election. Last January he had the honour of being appointed parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of National Defence.
In addition to his political achievements, he has become deeply involved in his community. He has, among other things, been the instigator of the Iberville Arts Symposium, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Caisse populaire d’Iberville, Vice-President of the Centre d’aide aux entreprises in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Treasurer of the Haut-Richelieu Hot Air Balloon Festival and President of the Haut-Richelieu Industrial and Technological Center. He has received the Excellence Award, Training category, from the Chamber of Commerce and the Termaco Scholarship.
